17 May is World Telecommunication Information Society Day

Digital technologies have the power to accelerate progress across every sector of society, yet that potential remains out of reach for many. Of the 2.6 billion people still unconnected, the majority are women and girls . Gaps in access and affordability of the internet and digital devices, as well as limited digital skills, continue to hinder the participation of women and girls in today’s economy and in shaping tomorrow’s digital solutions. Bridging this divide is essential to unlocking new pathways for economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development.

International Activity

From May 12 to 23, 2025, a meeting of Working Parties (WPs) 5A and 5C of the Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) is held in Geneva, Switzerland.

International Girls in ICT Day 2025

International Girls in ICT Day 2025 will be celebrated on 24 April under the theme “Girls in ICT for inclusive digital transformation”.

 

Global celebration:

This year, the global celebration will be co-hosted by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Arab States regions as a hybrid event, featuring a live link between Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and Nouakchott, Mauritania, along with distinguished panellists from around the world, live streamed for global audience.

Meeting of the expert group on preparation of the 4th meeting of heads of ministries and departments of the SCO member states

On April 9, the second meeting of the expert group for preparation of the 4th meeting of heads of ministries and departments of the SCO member states responsible for development of information and communication technologies was held in Hangzhou (China).

The meeting was chaired by China. The meeting was attended by representatives of the SCO Secretariat and SCO member states: Belarus, Russia, India, Pakistan, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

International cooperation with Pakistan

On April 3, 2025, the meeting was held between the Deputy Federal Minister for Communications of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Mr. Ali Sher Mehsud and the Director General of RUE Belpochta Svetlana Yurkevich.

During the meeting the parties discussed intentions to expand cooperation between postal operators with an emphasis on the development of e-commerce.

This meeting became an important stage in strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Belarus in the field of postal services.

The Republic of Belarus shares its experience: ITU holds a seminar on ICT statistics

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has launched a training seminar “Tools to support the formation of industry policy and regulation: ICT statistics and services quality assessment”.

Participants are representatives of government authorities responsible for formation of state statistics, operators, industry associations, universities, research and development centers.

ITU Workshop for CIS countries: Advanced technologies to support sustainable, inclusive and accessible societies (Minsk, Belarus, 28-29 November, 2024)

International event: Meeting of ITU Working Groups

From November 19 to 29, a meeting of Working Groups 5A, 5B and 5C of the ITU Radio Sector Research Commission 5 will be held in Geneva, Swiss Confederation. 

Specialists of the state enterprise "BelGIE" take part in the work. 

WP 5A considers issues related to research on electromagnetic compatibility of terrestrial mobile communication systems with the exception of IMT, revision and development of relevant ITU-R Recommendations and Reports. 

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN BELARUS, A HACKATHON ON CREATING STARTUPS FOR "SMART CITIES" AMONG STUDENTS OF HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

On October 8, 2024, an online Hackathon on creating startups for a smart city will be held. In our country, this is the first national-scale event organized for students of higher education institutions in order to create urban startups. 

The International Telecommunication Union has published an updated Radio Regulations, which will enter into force on January 1, 2025

This event was preceded by a rather long four-year preparatory research process conducted in the ITU Radiocommunication Sector, which ended with the 2023 World Radiocommunication Conference.

One of the key decisions for the Republic of Belarus taken at WRC-23 was the definition of the spectrum for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), which will be crucial for expanding the possibility of establishing broadband connections and developing IMT technologies, also known as 4G, 5G and in the future − 6G.
